The role of the portfolio manager

Essential to a company's development and growth, the portfolio manager assesses markets and establishes investment strategies in close collaboration with the management committees. They maximize the return on portfolios comprised of financial assets, based on their convictions and under the supervision of the French Financial Markets Authority (AMF), in accordance with legislation. They also support the sales team by proposing cash management methods and investment strategies. Responsible for the rigorous monitoring of portfolios, they may be required to create risk measurement and control tools for each investment, or to improve existing ones.

Within the team, he reports on portfolio management , analyzes and comments on various movements, and participates in management decisions for the companies under his responsibility. Following meetings with companies, he is also required to write summary reports and develop well-documented and reasoned recommendations regarding investment strategies.

The desired profile

Ideally, a portfolio manager is passionate about financial markets and holds a Master's degree (or equivalent) from a business, finance, or engineering school. In addition to financial mathematics, fluency in English is essential. Furthermore, management and control tools are often complex, so candidates are expected to have strong programming skills. Finally, given the financial analysis skills required of a portfolio manager , a solid foundation in insurance and statistics is a significant asset. Five to ten years of experience in an asset management firm or on a trading floor will further enhance these skills.
